Welcoming new Minister for the Prevention of Family and Sexual Violence

Over the weekend the Government announced the creation of a new ministerial role to lead the way toward dealing with one of New Zealand’s most troubling problems, family violence. Green Party co-leader Marama Davidson was appointed the country’s first-ever Minister for the Prevention of Family and Sexual Violence. SVS – Living Safe General Manager Dee Cresswell is hailing the news as a serious achievement that already goes beyond expectations for this new government.

“We are encouraged that our Government is taking the issue of family violence so seriously as to create this key position, something none of us in the family violence field asked for or expected. Still, the tremendous work started by Jan Logie during the last term and the ongoing pressure agencies like ours put on various ministries to do more has resulted in a tremendous step that deserves to be celebrated. Now, let’s get to work.”
