Who we are
About RISE
RISE is a specialist family violence organisation. As an organisation, we have deep expert knowledge of the family violence field that is embedded at all levels of our work. For more than 35 years, RISE has helped individuals and families seek and achieve real change to live healthier and safer lives. We are an accredited organisation, approved by the Ministry of Social Development, Oranga Tamariki, the Ministry of Justice, and the Department of Corrections.

We work with people who use violence as well as people who experience it. It is only when we work with the entire whānau – including the perpetrator of the harm who also needs help – that everyone can develop sustainable ways of preventing future violence. A family-centred approach gives everyone a better chance of creating lasting change.
Our clinicians and social workers have significant education in their specialised fields. They undergo further on-the-job training with RISE to enrich their formal qualifications to specialise in this work.
We are a charitable NGO serving communities in Nelson, Tasman, the West Coast, Marlborough and Kaikoura. Our primary office is in Nelson and we have an office in Motueka, both in the top of the South Island of New Zealand. We are a member of the National Network of Family Violence Services and participate in daily meetings with Police and various agencies working together to prevent family harm.

HISTORY
RISE first began in 1982 as Men Against Rape, founded by a group of men who met at Fairfield House. They sought to support the work of Women’s Refuge and Rape Crisis in Nelson through fundraising and any other assistance they could offer. Through the last several decades, we have evolved and changed with the times to become a leading specialist organisation in our field and throughout New Zealand.
Board
Dedicated local volunteers help guide the organisation forward by following a five-year strategic plan. We are grateful to have experienced, strong leadership.
Staff
We employ 20 specially trained family violence clinicians, and social workers with a variety of specialties. Our administrative team is the heart of our operation.
Partners
Local, regional, and national organisations that operate in this specialist field work alongside us to ensure family violence in New Zealand is eliminated in the future.
Funders
We hold contracts with key central government ministries to deliver services and we are supported by community foundations and organisations that believe in our mission.
